Having arrived a little late for our scheduled meeting, we stagiaires shuffled (or strode confidently, depending on your style) into a very pleasant room with a varied assortment of yummy-looking bite-sized sandwiches arrayed on display in the middle of the room. Which of course, we didn’t pay much attention to because we were there to broaden our horizons career-wise and find out more about… ooh! Is that a foccacia sandwich? Yum!

A Brit Abroad. A Rough Guide to Entertainment at the weekend (2).
This week I shall be focusing on a more central area of the city, if not thee most central: the aptly named Grand Placeand its provincial side streets. Constructed around the 1400′s the area presents wonderful gothic scenery with modern niceties, such as toilets. However don’t be caught in any of these establishments without a few cents in your pocket as madam pis will not allow you to ‘spend a penny’ let alone a cent. Head for Manneken Pis and if you are with a visitor show them the obscure little boy on the way and explain that some times there is no explanation for Belgian delights. Or do as I always do and make up another fable of how the little boy came to be, it may become legend one day.

A Brit Abroad. A Rough Guide to Entertainment at the weekend.
The St-Catherine area of Brussels is currently undergoing some sort of Santa make-over. Upon surfacing from the Metro you walk into a land of huts, lights, decorations and fairground rides (boasting a large Ferris wheel right in the centre). But it is not the latest editions that have popped up over the winter period that should lure you to this area, but something more permanent.
A short walk from St-Catherine Metro past all the seafood restaurants you will find ‘Monk’ bar. Alike most places in Brussels it is submissive nature, brandishing a sign outside that would make most television sets look large. But upon entering this traditional Smokey Belgian bar you soon realise why it is a must see.

Olé to all the spanish students!
The clock strikes 17.30 … the seconds pass very slowly. The first spanish lesson is in 30 minutes… My hands start to sweat a little bit, I start to become. I have been preparing the first spanish lesson for some days now, and today is the day.
I look at the time on my phone… it’s time to go, I pick up my things and go to the Montoyer Building 63, a building that I think I willhardly forget. Elena (the other spanish teacher for the intermediat level) and me are the first ones to arrive. We have no idea how to plug in the projector, and we cannot find any marker for the blackboard (well, white board).
